Details: Georg Flegel was born in 1566 in Olomouc, Moravia.Around 1580, he moved to Vienna, where he became a student of Lucas van Valckenborch I, a well-known artist and printmaker. Georg Flegel and his teacher, who was his employer, moved to Frankfurt some years later, an important city, a center of prominent people interested in art.As an assistant in the workshop of Lucas van Valckenborch I, the task of the young Flegel was to insert objects such as fruit, flowers, and tableware into the works of his teacher.Probably in 1616, Georg Flegel moved to Utrecht because of the new Guild of St. Luca founded in this city. Coming to become a member of the guild and an independent master, he certainly knew other artists who were active there during this period, such as Roelandt Savery and Balthasar van der Ast.According to some of his other biographers, Flegel was a pupil of Lucas van Valckenborch in Linz during the years 1582-1592, after which he became master of the St. Luke Guild in Utrecht.Either way, over about 30 years (from 1600 to 1630), Georg Flegel painted 110 dated and signed watercolors and Oil paintings, mostly still life, which often depict flower tables arranged for feeding.Among his students were his two sons, Friedrich and Jacob, as well as the painter of still lifes with flowers Jacob Marrel.Georg Flegel died in 1638 in Frankfurt-am-Main at the age of 72.
